Voyagers of Elsewhere | Jay Torres
The constant wandering of the mind coexists with intrigue on the undiscovered. May it be conceptual or tangible, these steady thoughts and emotions are delicately unraveled by the works of Filipino artist, Jay Torres.
In his solo exhibition “Voyagers to Elsewhere,” Torres explores the journey of an individual leading to a conscious introspection toward a plethora of world views. These perspectives are depicted as unending horizons, landscape backgrounds extending beyond the canvas. The artist uses a muted palette to the calming effect, yet creating an ambiance of uncertainty which proceeds to further tread more grounds. Torres’ subjects, enveloped with an atmosphere of blankness, reflect a moment of lingering contemplation. As these travelers ceaselessly walk away or look beyond a vast unknown, Torres emboldens the viewer to yearn for answers, and through his paintings, mirror a quest for self-discovery.
In a time of isolation, Torres and his artworks ponder on the thought of being more and looking for more by reaching within, a seemingly peculiar setting for the self. However, to be such a voyager is so compelling that embarking on this odyssey encourages one’s self to savor each step toward elsewhere. [Write up by Deseree Mangulabnan]
