Old Holland

In 1664, various Old Dutch master painters established Old Holland. Now, centuries later, we still use their recipes to make your colours. Except we do that with the latest technology.

Old Holland is a household name among artists worldwide. Artists and professional restorers in more than 50 countries use our colours. Because they know it: Old Holland gives you the result you have in mind.

The Old Dutch masters’ paintings are hundreds of years old. You can still enjoy their splendour. Old Holland immortalises your creations for future generations. Because that is what motivates and inspires us to use the best traditions to create the best colours from the best ingredients: the eternal splendour of painting.

Old Holland Classic Oil Colours

n 1985, following extensive research, Old Holland presented a revolutionary range of 168 oil paints, each with the highest degree of lightfastness. Traditional, non-lightfast pigments were replaced with modern lightfast pigments with the same colour characteristics as the traditional ones. Thanks to the highest possible concentration of pigment in each colour, the paint has an unprecedented colour strength.

Within the unique range there is a wide range of opaque and transparent colours, each with the highest possible brilliance (intense) and clarity (clean) characteristics. The only medium used for these oil paints is cold-pressed extra virgin linseed oil, used to obtain optimum oxidisation (drying) of the paint. This increases durability and brushstroke spread. Together, these characteristics result in an oil paint of unequalled quality.

  • Made according to the recipes of Old Masters

  • A unique mix of the best traditional colours and the best lightfast pigments

  • The highest possible pigment concentration in every colour

  • Based on cold pressed linseed oil from the first pressing of the seeds

  • With a hand-painted colour example on each tube

Old Holland Classic Watercolors
The Old Holland Classic Watercolour range is extensive and excellent quality, providing colours which are unique in their colour strength with maximum pigmentation. This high colour strength requires a different approach, meaning little paint is needed from the tube or pan for the desired colour effect. These paints are rich and beautiful with excellent colour lifting abilities.
It is well-known that Old Holland attaches a hand-painted colour strip to its tubes of oil paint and acrylic paint, showing the paint in the tube. A different solution was chosen for the watercolours. The labels of the tubes and cups of watercolour do not show the full tone of the paint, but the undertone (a logical choice following on from the technique of watercolour painting). The colours on the labels are screen printed with the watercolour in this undertone, using a screen printing technique developed specially for Old Holland.
Founded in 1664, Old Holland has more than three centuries of traditional experience in the manufacture of artist paints. Renown across the world, they were used by both Van Gogh and Vermeer.
