New Derivan FabricArt Marker’s colours are transparent and matt when dry, they resist fading on most fabrics and are wash resist during normal wash cycles after they are heat fixed.
Application
For best results wash and iron beforehand to remove any sizing. Allow the fabric to dry. The markers will work on cotton, polyester and most fabrics. Please note that colours may not show up on dark coloured fabrics.
It is prudent to do a test piece prior to embarking on a large project.
Place the fabric to be decorated on top of a piece paper or cardboard to prevent the markers from bleeding through the cloth. If you are drawing on a T-shirt, place the paper inside the shirt, between the front and back sections. Lay the fabric out on any work surface so it is smooth. It is best to tape the edges to hold the fabric in place while you work.
Colour your material using a plenty of ink. Light marks are more likely to wash out. Saturating the fabric well will guarantee the colour will remain on the fabric. Put aside your creation to let it dry before you set the design with heat. Drying times may range from just a few minutes to an hour or more, depending on how thoroughly you have covered your fabric. Test the surface of the paint to ensure it is dry.
Heat Fixing:
Set the markers by using either an iron or clothes dryer.
Iron: With an iron on cotton setting – press over the design slowly for about 2 to 3 minutes on the reverse side of the fabric. Move the hot iron over the surface evenly.
Dryer: If you prefer to use the dryer, tumble dry on high for about an hour and a half. Tumble dry only the items you have coloured with your fabric markers in the same load to avoid staining other clothing.
Washing:
Allow 48 hrs. after fixing before washing. Gentle machine-washing in cold water is best. Do not use bleach. Hang to dry.

Derivan Fabric Art Paint is atotally water-based and formulated as a safe, non-toxic paint for fabric. It can be used in the clssroom or at home safely without the worry of being exposed to solvents such as white spirits, turps or thinners. Available in 13 colours, this non-toxic water based paint is the first step in creating larger areas of colour on any fabric. All you do is apply with a brush, allow to dry for 48 hours, then heat set with an iron to ensure that it will remain colourfast when washed. All colours can be mixed to create a spectrum of shades only limited by your imagination. The range also includes 3 fluorescent colours that become luminous under UV light and look great on both light and dark fabrics. If you are more of a drawer than a painter then you can use the Fabric Art Markers to create hand-drawn designs. This unique double-ended marker has a chisel and bullet for maximum versatility. Use the chisel tip to create larger flat lines and the smaller bullet tip for smaller consistent lines. The clear caps enable you see the colour no matter what end you look at.
When creating a fabric art, a good tip is to draw a design on fabric lightly with a HB pencil, then use the brush to apply the paint to the desired areas. When you wash the fabric after heat-setting, the pencil marks will wash away leaving your design behind. If you are painting a t-shirt, we recommend that you place a thick piece of cardboard inside the t-shirt to ensure that the paint doesn’t seep through to the back. Stretching the t-shirt tautly over the cardboard with pegs will also help prevent the fabric from moving while you create your art!
Derivan Fabric Art Paint washes up in water (before it is heat set) but has excellent rub resistance and lightfastness once heat set. Heat fixing times and temperatures vary, however, a guide is as follows:
Cotton, calico, linen, rayon - 4-5 mins at 140ºC - 180ºC
Synthetics, nylon, polyester, tetron, acrylic - 5-8 mins at 115ºC - 130ºC
Wash all utensils, brushes and hands with soap and water to clean up. Important projects warrant testing to determine maximum temperature to make image fast and avoid scorching. Test by heat fixing a test strip and washing in heavy duty cycle.
Derivan FabricArt is the newest way to make your mark. These three products have been designed for you to customise and create unique designs on most fabrics. All you need is Derivan FabricArt and some creative spirit to transform fabric items such as t-shirts, canvas shoes and pillowcases into unique and wearable statements.

When first applied the white looks very transparent when applied over dark coloured fabrics - leave it to dry for 10 or 15 minutes and it will produce a brilliant opaque white mark. On very porous or open weave fabrics you may need to repeat the application 2 or 3 times to achieve an opaque finish (leaving to dry between applications). Dark Fabrics:
The FabricArt Marker in white makes a great base for all the other colours on dark fabrics. When using Derivan FabricArt Markers on dark coloured fabrics, do your design in the white marker first, as described above, and once dry, apply chosen colours over the top to achieve an opaque finish on dark fabrics.
Set the markers by using either an iron or clothes dryer. Iron: With an iron on cotton setting – press over the design slowly for about 2 to 3 minutes on the reverse side of the fabric. Move the hot iron over the surface evenly.

Allow 48 hrs. after fixing before washing. Gentle machine-washing in cold water is best. Do not use bleach. Hang to dry.
Store markers in a horizontal position in a cool place -box, pencil case, drawer, etc.- and always replace caps tightly after use.
Derivan Screen Ink is a totally water-based silk screen printing ink.
Derivan Screen Ink has been formulated as a safe, non-toxic silk screen printing ink for fabric and Tie Dyeing. It can be used in the classroom or at home safely without the worry of being exposed to harmful solvents such as white spirits, turps or thinners. Derivan Screen Ink is water-based and washes up in water (before it is heat set) but has excellent rub resistance and lightfastness once heat set.
All the colours may be intermixed to form bright secondary and tertiary colours. White (Opaque) may be mixed if pale pastel opaque prints are desired on dark coloured fabrics.
This is a thick milky coloured paste which dries colourless and transparent. It is used for intermixing with standard printing colours in order to extend deep colours into pale or lighter transparent shades (Red into transparent pink, etc.). Mainly for White or pale fabrics.
Wash all utensils, brushes and hands with soap and water to clean up.
It is important to make sure the silk screen blockout or stencil system that is to be used is compatible with water-based products (some are completely resistant to many solvents but water will destroy them).
Generally speaking, the best mesh size for fabric printing is 10T to 25T (monofilament). A coarser mesh screen is required for fabric than for paper; more ink is required as fabric tends to be more absorbent.
Best results are obtained from absorbent fabrics; avoid waterproof fabrics as they tend to inhibit penetration and repel the water-based colours. Fabrics containing starch, size, fillers, softeners or crease-proof treatments should be washed prior to printing. Fabrics containing waterproofing treatments may not accept the paints and may result in mottling, poor colour adhesion or patchy printing and may not remain washproof.
It is necessary to heat fix the image if it is to be washproof. Heat fixing can take many forms. The main points to be observed are:
The image must be air dried before it is heat fixed.
Ensure the heat is applied evenly over the image.
Ensure the heat is applied continuously for the required time over the image.
Be sure not to scorch or burn the image or garment.
Any type of heat can be used. Heat tunnels, ovens, even the humble household iron can all be used. If using contact heat (for instance an iron), use a tea towel or another piece of cotton cloth over the image to iron on. Do not iron directly over the print.
Heat fixing times and temperatures vary. However, a guide is as follows:
Cotton, calico, linen, rayon - 4-5 mins at 140-180°C
Synthetics, nylon, polyester, tetron, acrylic - 5-8 mins at 115-130°C. .
Important projects warrant testing to determine maximum temperature to make image fast and avoid scorching. Test by heat-fixing a test strip and washing in a heavy duty cycle.
